Colloquy Magazine Redesign

Colloquy

Colloquy is published for Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) community. The word, colloquy, means “a conversational exchange.” The redesign, from structure and nomenclature to design and art direction, was developed in the spirit of a conversation. The new logo is intentionally all lowercase giving the cover an approachable feeling, while the boldness of the font exudes confidence. The interior pages reveal conversational nomenclature including, “greeting,” “discourse,” and “conversation.”

During the critique phase we learned that GSAS community is curious and engaged about not just what they studied at GSAS but a range of topics—scientists want to read about art, filmmakers want to learn about bioscience. This inspired the directive for the interior pages to be a two-dimensional space full of curious people and interesting topics. Candid portrait photography gives the reader the feeling of being in the same space with the subject. Provocative and whimsical illustrations complement the photo-rich magazine and allow for more complex stories to be told visually.
